Comforting Anesthesia for the Dog You Love

Surgery for your dog is a major decision, and the type of anesthetic used should be discussed with your veterinarian.

There are two types of anesthetics given to dogs. Injectible and inhalation are the two types given. In both types, the purpose is to put your pet into a deep sleep that reduces body functions, relaxes muscles, and blocks pain. Injectibles lead to a longer recovery than inhalation anesthetics. After-effects include lethargy, irritability and/ or excessive salivation. Inhalation systems are gasses that are controlled by the veterinarian using an anesthetic machine adjusting the flow much easier and are considered very safe for your pet.

The most modern inhalation anesthetic is SevoFlo, which has been used in human medicine (especially pediatrics) since 1995. Even though this product requires an expensive anesthetic machine and costs more than the average anesthetic, those veterinarians using SevoFlo are able to operate on Geriatric, Overweight, and dogs with other complications with minimal risk. The dog begins waking up within a few minutes and endures far less stress on their system.

Ask your veterinarian about your dog’s surgery and the type of anesthesia he will be using. You and your pet deserve the safest and most modern procedures available.
