The DANGERS of Irregular Bowel Habits in Pets

Years ago, people didn’t talk about bowel habits, but today “IRREGULARITY” is all over the media! Because our pets can’t talk, if their symptoms of Bloating, Gas and Discomfort go untreated, more Serious Consequences can develop. A pet showing signs of loss of appetite and/or general malaise, blocked, abscessed and/or ruptured anal glands or bowel could result in toxicity, hospitalization or bowel surgery.

What To Look For:

-less than one bowel movement per 24 hours; -small, hard or dry bm’s; -obvious blood or dark stools; -runny or pasty bm’s or gooey mucous coat on bm; -straining or frequent attempts to poop

Possible Causes:

-improper diet and/or water intake
-slow-moving bowels due to AGE or INACTIVITY
-cancer; -stool impaction/fecaliths or anal gland abscesses; -parasites

What Can Be Done?

-first, consult a veterinarian. They may suggest: -increase dietary fiber/increase water intake; -encourage exercise-at least 15 minutes per day; -medicines to stimulate bm’s and/or decrease bloat; -supplements like the “Activia Challenge” for people; -enemas
