Geriatrics

Geriatric Age: Small Dog 9-12 Yrs.
Medium Dog 9-11 Yrs.
Large Dog 7-9 Yrs.
Cats 8-10 Yrs.

Geriatric dogs and cats make up a large portion of the patients seen in most veterinary practices. The veterinarians responsibility to older animals is to delay, or at least minimize the progressive deterioration of the body systems from the aging process and provide an improved quality of life for the weeks or months or years ahead. Delivery of state-of-the-art medical or surgical therapy and competent nutritional management is the primary good for geriatric health care.

To obtain our goal of minimizing the progressive deterioration of the body systems from the aging process, a thorough physical exam should be performed every 6 months or so. The importance of the owners input can not be emphasized enough. Example: “Doc”, I have to add more water to Annie’s bowl lately.” is a good indicator for possible test, x-rays etc., that might be needed to improve the quaility of life.

In summary, veterinarians need to educate pet owners on animal life cycles, so their pets may live, healthier, longer lives. Compliments of Steven J. Fox, D.V.M., Fox & Friends Animal Hospital, Sun City Center, 813.633.2443.
