Prevent Parvo In Puppies - Vaccinate!

Canine parvovirus is the scientific name for Parvo in puppies.  Parvo is a very aggressive and highly contagious virus that spreads by direct and indirect contact with feces. Puppies that have not built up antibodies and haven’t been vaccinated are at risk of contracting the virus. Mortality can be over 90% in cases untreated.

Parvo presents itself in either a cardio or intestinal form.  Cardio causes respiratory and heart failure and intestinal causes loss of appetite, severe vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration, bloody feces or feces unusually dark in color, fever and a low white blood cell count.

The disease is most often treated with intravenous fluids, antibiotics and electrolyte balance. Treatment is not a “cure” for Parvo and will not kill the virus; it aids in supporting the dog to give his immune system time to begin counteracting the virus.

Take steps to protect your puppy by limiting the time your puppy spends outside and do not take your little love to dog parks, pet stores or anywhere else frequented by other canines until they are vaccinated.

Talk with your local veterinarian about a complete vaccination program to ensure a happy and healthy life for your best friend! Generally, the first vaccine is given at 6-8 weeks of age and a booster is given every four weeks until the puppy is 16-20 weeks old, and then again at one year of age. A vaccination program generally is complete at 4 months of age.
