Ear Infections

Ear infections are common, and unfortunately, often reoccurring, with dogs more so than cats.

Recent advances in ear endoscopy and additional advanced education for interested veterinarians have elevated the quality of care given to ear disease. Time has shown us that the common treatment of putting drops in the ear usually resulted in temporary symptomatic improvements, but, all too often, did not cure the underlying disease process.

Commonly, exudates and cerumen fill the ear canal making examination of the ear drum impossible. Evaluation of the ear drum is critical in differentiating external ear infections from middle ear infections. When evaluation is needed, a hospital lavage with anesthesia and endoscopic video taping reveals the full extent of the disease and greatly helps the owner to appreciate the seriousness of the condition and the effort required by them to make and keep the ear disease-free.

Many new treatments, medical and surgical, are available to treat various ear conditions but the most valuable is thorough, competent ear cleaning; after all, clean body parts seldom get infected. Professional instructions and visual aids make the task much easier and more effective. Seeking the advice of a veterinarian who has an ear endoscope and expertise in ear disease will pay dividends in a healthy, happy pet.
