What Is An Animal Trust
And Why Every Animal Owner Should Have One
A pet trust is a legal document that allows the creator to name a person (or rescue) to take care of their pet(s), after the creators death, or incapacity, without the need for a court order. It is not a Power of Attorney, because a Power of Attorney is terminated upon death.
If you love your pet(s) and want to make sure they are cared for after your death or incapacity then you need to designate a family member or a rescue to take care of the pet for you. In the trust you will also designate an amount of money to help for the care and or transportation of the pet to the caregiver. The worst thing that could happen is that your pet might ultimately be picked up by animal control and left at a shelter. If the pet was not adopted, it could be killed. When there is nothing wrong with the pet except that the owner has died or become unable to care for it, this is a sad outcome.
There are many rescue organizations, for every breed of animal, that would be more than willing to receive the pet and money to care for the pet until they could be found a new furever home again.
