Bad Breath In Dogs and Cats

By far the most common cause of bad breath in our dogs and cats is dental disease.

Our pets get tartar build up and gingivitis as a result of genetics and the type of food they eat. Tartar is made up of minerals, protein and bacteria. The bacteria cause inflammation of the gums and the gums recede. The roots become exposed and our pets can lose their teeth. Also, abscesses and infection of the bone of the jaw is a common problem due to the bacteria in the mouth.

Perhaps more importantly, the bacteria enter the blood stream and can spread to the rest of the body. In dogs the bacteria isolate on the heart valves and cause heart disease. In cats the bacteria have an affinity for the kidneys and cause renal failure.

Regular examination of the teeth is very important. Brushing, using dental gels and special dental diets will dramatically reduce the tartar build up and bacteria in the mouth. Many pets will need dental cleaning and polishing to maintain their health. Make sure you get your pets’ teeth checked on a regular basis.

A new vaccine is soon to be released which will help our dogs and cats to build up an immunity to the bacteria that cause dental disease. This could be an exciting new aide in the prevention of dental disease. Presented as a public service by Ronni Tudin, D.V.M.,
