Eye Of The Beholder

If all cats are created equal, why are some more equal than others? The answer is the level of human commitment given to them. Humans impact the lives of all cats positively or negatively when they meet their needs or they don’t. The ‘companion’ cats that live in loving homes fare best as they are safe; their needs are met and the relationship is mutually beneficial. Unsocialized cats, who were born feral or became feral because of neglect or abandonment or from owners who tolerate an outdoor life for them, fare the worst. Their life span, a potential for 25% of ours, is shortened by more than half. The unnatural ‘feral’ life is filled with disease, fear, misery and starvation.

Many are killed by coyote who do not have to be efficient/quick killers when their food supply is abundant. The natural balance is disturbed when cats prey on wildlife to survive or when wildlife preys on them. The humane solution to protect both cats and wildlife lies in both the prevention and cure. Trap to neuter the current population, vaccinate and return them to safe neighborhoods where caregivers monitor them and socialize and adopt out kittens. Release should not occur in parks, bird breeding, nesting or migratory areas or where property owners disapprove. Keep cat’s home; never let them roam free. Abandoning a cat to live outside is a crime in Florida, even when relocating. They deserve more and better. Take your cat with you or to a shelter.
