Birds — Our Feathered Friends

Birds are very simple animals yet quite complex at the same time. All too often, pet birds end up spending almost their entire lives locked up in a cage, receiving only rudimentary food and water, and never enjoying a mutually rewarding relationship with their human stewards. With a basic understanding of a birds behavior and a respect of your birds “space”, it is possible to have a loving and loyal friend in your feathered companion. Some birds do better with a cage-mate. Others are loners. Different breeds have varying abilities and personalities. Some birds are like tape recorders, and some are not good talkers, but they are a smaller and more manageable breed. The key point is you must get to know your bird, its likes and dislikes, its feeding preferences, and its needs for interacting.

The living environment must be suitable, as in stress-free and smoke-free (smoking is a main contributor to feather picking as nicotine sticks to the birds feathers).

The goal is to make your bird tame by winning its confidence, and then you can train your bird to talk and behave properly. Hunger and appetite are very strong instincts and may be used as a taming and training method. If your pet bird is over a year old, chances are, any bad habits will be very hard to eradicate as bird habits are quite strong. Before you decide to get rid of your problem bird, consider calling a professional who can set you on the right path to building a better relationship with your pet bird.
